Clay, glazes
One-of-a-kind, in a series of DevGoyles
It seems that whenever I have a small piece of clay in my hand and no prior plans I create a little “devil-head,” often inside a cavelike structure – sometimes out in the open. Since they feel good and come from a kind and loving place inside me, I realized that they are similar to gargoyles. Gargoyles are the ugly devilish looking stone creatures sitting on the corners of many ancient churches and buildings. They're made to be uglier than devils to scare the devils off.
My “Devgoyles” (devil-gargoyles) are good-luck charms. They are based on the theory that if there's a “devil” in the house already, there's no room for any other devil. Like a “kitchen witch” that keeps your kitchen safe.
These are all one-of-a-kind and I never know when the next one will show up.
I kind of like them as a collection along my own shelf, but I am willing to part with them if someone else needs their good luck charms.
And always remember the chorus to Rodney Atkins' Country Song written by Dave Berg, Sam Tate and Annie Tate:
If you're going through hell
Keep on going, don't slow down
If you're scared, don't show it
You might get out
Before the devil even knows you're there
